Sukhasana: A Sweet Pose for Body, Mind and More

By Nirooshitha Sethuram, Yogaratna

The sweetness of sitting is found in Sukhasana, one of my favorite poses. The name says it all. Sukha in Sanskrit means happiness, pleasant, ease, joy or bliss.

Sukhasana gives me all these experiences, and more, especially when well aligned with an upright spine. Then I settle into myself.  I find the balance point in my torso and use the natural support of my spinal column.

I also use props to make myself comfortable.  Rolled blankets under my knees keep my thighs level, front to back. When I am well aligned with props, my head stays where it belongs, and my sit bones are leveled.  Then this relaxing, gentle pose helps ease any low back and knee pain.

My whole spine lengthens from my tailbone all the way into my ribcage and neck.  I feel my hips opening. This spinal release unravels tension in my knees and ankles as well.

Then I can sit in Sukhasana for a longer time.   I simply abide in my own Self, settling into stillness, outside and inside.  I often sit in Sukhasana when I am listening to my Guru’s discourses and other teachings. I meditate in Sukhasana all the time.  The simplicity of this pose makes it easy for me to teach, meditate and pray.

Most of all, this pose soothes and calms my mind and grounds me inside.  It provides the physical support that allows me to experience a sense of inner peace and calmness while remaining completely present.  It fills me fully and brings contentment.

Sitting in Sukhasana invites my mind to come inside, sit and stay. It also gives me the pillar of support while practicing Ujjayi Pranayama. I can accustom myself to the inner energies that are balancing and flowing up my spine.  My mind is quieted and my awareness turns easily inward.

This is all possible by the blessings of our Guru, Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati, whom we lovingly call GurudeviJi. I am forever grateful to my Guru and the practices she has blessed us with, so gracefully.

Your State Affects Your Life

Excerpt from Telecourse by Gurudevi Nirmalananda

Your mental and emotional state affects your relationships, your work and even your health.

Emotional pain and psychological needs can be what motivated you to start yoga, but everything changes when you discover what you really get — your capital-S Self.

The bliss of the Self is far greater than any blissful sensory experience. The depth at which you live, within yourself, is more meaningful than anything outside of you can provide. While the Svaroopa® practices improve your psychology, they’re not about psychology. They’re about enlightenment.

Yet, on the way to enlightenment, you become a better person, a happier person, more understanding, more generous, more genuinely present in everything you do. But if your goal is to be better, happier, understanding, etc., you’ll settle for too little. Wearing the clothes, wearing the jewelry and wearing the mask of spirituality just freezes you into another superficial sense of self

Yoga’s spirituality is for a purpose. Just like a car’s purpose is to provide you with reliable transportation, not to give you an identity. For example, I’m now driving my 6th Honda over the years, but I don’t have the identity of being a Honda owner.

The Guru keeps you on track, if you let yourself be seen. Many Svaroopis keep a careful distance from me, because they know that, if they come, I’ll see how they are and where they’re at. Of course! I care about you! If you’re stuck in your stuff, do I want to leave you there?

The Gift of Shaktipat

By Elena (Lila) Perri

I took my first Shaktipat Retreat in May 2022.  That retreat and the two following opened me more and more to the power of mantra and meditation.  My fourth Shaktipat Retreat was last September.

After we chanted the Guru Gita, I felt Kundalini moving upward promptly in meditation.  I felt her hitting blocks and triggering thoughts related to difficult relationships.  I sent forgiveness to all.  This allowed Kundalini to fly up more powerfully and expansively. It was an intensely strong realization of the power of forgiveness.

When our Swami Nirmalananda gave the first Shaktipat, I felt Kundalini rising into my heart.  She began to meet some resistance.  I experienced physical movements, spontaneous bucking as Kundalini continued her upward journey.

Suddenly, I began to sob uncontrollably.  Tears followed as I cried silently for no apparent reason. I was in a timeless space. Then as quickly as the sobbing and tears started, they abated.  I felt an enormous rush of heat moving up from the base of my spine.  Then a vision of pure white light also rushed up my spine.   I melted into a supreme state of bliss.

Gurudevi gave Shaktipat again in the afternoon.  Again, Shaktipat opening blessed me with the same state of bliss.  I received profound knowing and realization.  No material pursuit, activity or endeavor renders bliss.  I have experienced bliss only through Shaktipat openings.

A Shaktipat Retreat is a deep dive into blissful communion with Self.  Time stands still.  All worldly experiences pale in comparison.   I am grateful to Gurudevi for her service, Grace and the most precious gift of Shaktipat.

This gift has changed my life.  I am now grounded in what I have always yearned for.   The more I sit in Self, the more Self is being one with Self.  I feel the freedom to be there and allow Kundalini to move through me.  After the meditation, I feel unburdened of the distractions of life that I hadn’t realized I carried.

Yogic Discipline

By Gurudevi Nirmalananda

In yoga, discipline is not the same as “spare the rod and spoil the child” — punishment and enforcement.

Yogic discipline is the means by which you are uplifted and transformed. It is how you can get the highest and the best from your yoga practice.

Continued application of your own effort, on a regular basis, is what makes you successful at anything in your life: yoga, art, business, relationships, etc.

The best athletes and musicians must practice daily, yet they do not consider it an onerous duty. Top musicians love to do the scales! True discipline is doing regularly what makes you feel best. Regularity is the key, and it is what ultimately makes it easy. Consider who creates this regularity? Your job may require you to keep certain hours. This then determines when you eat, get up, go to bed, and have free time.

A newly self-employed or retired person often has difficulty organizing these things, because they are used to an externally imposed discipline. Yet, even enforced discipline can yield great benefits. A woman in her ‘60s told me she hated her mother for sending her to piano lessons and making her practice every day. Now the piano is one of the greatest joys in her life. In yoga class you experience…

Clarity & Strength for Healing

By Amanda (Purna) Schmidt

Interviewed by Marlene (Matrikaa) Gast, Yogaratna

Last June, I moved from NC to PA, near the Ashram’s Downingtown Yoga & Meditation Center. I have easy access to Svaroopa® Yoga Therapy as well as a new Functional Medicine practitioner.

Fortunately, she ordered lab tests that clearly diagnosed conditions I’ve had for two years or more: long COVID-19, chronic inflammatory response syndrome and adrenal fatigue.

I’ve undertaken her prescribed lifestyle changes: regular meal times, a diet to support stable insulin levels and nutritional supplements. More tests may indicate additional treatment.

To complement the medical approach, I’m now on board with yoga therapy as well. Yoga sees a depleted prana (life force) as the source of fatigue and illness. Filling one’s reservoir of prana alleviates fatigue and promotes healing. So, three months ago, I began an Overlap Healing series of Embodyment® sessions at DYMC.

By employing a combination of additional Svaroopa® yoga tools, I’m noticing a gradual reduction in symptoms. I have more energy, a better outlook and greater mental resilience.

I do the home practices prescribed by my Svaroopa® Yoga Therapist: lots of Ujjayi and long rests in Shavasana. My total Ujjayi time is an hour daily. For Shavasana, I immerse myself in 30 minutes of Guided Awareness on Gurudevi’s “Experience Shavasana” CD. Then I soak in silent Shavasana for another 15 minutes.

With a replenished pranic reservoir, I feel stronger. My yoga therapist let me know a certain level of prana is needed for meditation. I’ve now built up enough for a daily half-hour meditation.

Some days the physical symptoms of my condition are still prominent. Yet my outlook is less fearful. On those days, I accept that my physical body is doing what it’s doing. But that doesn’t mean I won’t get through these times. I can manage symptoms more effectively. I am headed into healing.

My miracle is having found Svaroopa® yoga. These practices and therapies are propelling my healing journey forward.

Healing on All Levels

By Jodi Dial

When I registered for my Healing Retreat, I was seeking more than healing from physical pain. I wanted to find God and wake up! It turned out that I got both.

From daily Svaroopa® yoga classes and individual yoga therapy, I got openings in my upper spine behind my heart. My hand tremors as well thyroid issues were soothed.

I also arrived with pain in my hip. Sitting for meditation was nearly impossible. By the retreat’s end, I could sit to meditate for a whole hour in the morning.

Meditations with Gurudevi Nirmalananda, along with her talks, were life changing. I know it’s the mind that has the greatest effect on the body. And meditation along with vichara sessions (guided self-inquiry) powerfully gave me exactly what I yearned for.

At first, however, vichara was scary. As a hairdresser, I have personal conversations with clients. They describe complicated situations, and I ask, “How so?” I’m great at turning such questions back to my clients. But when my Vichara Therapist posed these questions to me, I didn’t know what to say!

Yet, ultimately, my answers surfaced, and I got clarity. I was on a spiritual quest, looking for God. With vichara, I realized there are many paths to your own Truth. Finally, a vichara session brought me home inside to the knowing that I am God.

When I said these words, the electrical power in the building went out. My Vichara Therapist said, “I guess you got your answer.” I returned home in peace — with lots of energy, calm, trust and pure love.

When I graduated from Svaroopa® Yoga Teacher Training two decades ago, I was into working out and looking good. I didn’t know what yoga really meant. In this Healing Retreat, I “got” svaroopa (the bliss of my own being).

Now I see the world, other people, and myself differently. I’m filled with gratitude for my yoga family, including Gurudevi; her Guru, Swami Muktananda; and his Guru, Bhagawan Nityananda. I bow again and again, continuously.
