Incredible Support = Profound Release

By Sheralee (Shambhavi) Hancherow

Interviewed by Marlene (Matrikaa) Gast, Yogaratna

Last year was filled with a lot of emotional tapas along with incredible support. People don’t understand how much support is available from our Ashram.

I discovered that to undertake a healing process, I just had to stop and allow Guru’s Grace to work on different levels.

During the 2023 winter holidays, I overdid it. I pushed myself non-stop through the season. By January 2024, I flatlined emotionally. I wasn’t feeling much of anything and certainly not joy or bliss. In response, I chose “Feel” as my word for the year. I went into overdrive to try and fix myself by doing more yoga, vichara, workshops, etc.

In March, I saw an email about Gurudevi’s Office Hours. They are available to yogis who have a Shishya Membership. Fortunately, I’d been a Shishya for a decade. So I signed up for a phone call. I have always handled struggles on my own and was nervous in front of our Guru. Yet I knew she would help me.

Surprisingly, the help she gave me was not what I expected. But it was exactly what I needed: a mantra yoga buddy.

In April, I took the Healing Retreat. Being in the online option, I could experience the practices and profound changes in my own home in Canada. After that, one of our Swamis followed up and provided more support by Zoom.

The Ashram then arranged for a yogi in our community to call me every week to check on my progress.  We discussed the asana and meditation practices I was doing daily to support my process. Then the yogi reported back to Gurudevi. Over the summer, I continued to work on this heavy karma and took Gurudevi’s advice to see a counsellor. Learning about the patterns that limit me opened me up to a whole new level of Grace.

During this time of releasing so much “stuff,” my word-of-the-year — Feel — was paramount. I was on an emotional rollercoaster. Vichara (guided self-inquiry sessions) with my local Svaroopa® teacher, who is also a Vichara Therapist, provided profound learning. When she was out of town, I contacted our Ashram Enrollment Advisor and scheduled vichara with a Swami. Through these sessions, I was learning about myself. Though it was not always a joyful process, I persisted.

At the same time, I found a local Ayurveda physician. I’d been seeking one for a long time, and suddenly I found her. Her diagnosis included the observation that she did not see joy bubbling up within me.

Yet now joy is doing just that. Cooking my breakfast this morning, I was dancing and singing in the kitchen while listening to my yoga music.

Yes, I’ve done a lot. I’ve learned it’s not about fixing myself but opening to the Grace that is always there. The support that comes from our Guru is profoundly deeper than I thought possible.

I have learned to tap into that Grace. It is transformational and illuminating, and I am forever grateful to my Guru, the Swamis and my yoga community.

Sing Along with Gurudevi’s “Jyota se Jyota”

By Joan (Jayadevi) Bragar

A famous Indian singer composed “Jyota se Jyota” in Hindi as a tribute to Baba Muktananda.  Gurudevi has rendered this beautiful hymn into English verses.  You can find audios and lyrics of both.

We sing the full version as part of the arati (candle ceremony) honoring Baba Muktananda before the morning meditation.  We subscribers to the online Meditation Club joyfully sing it with Gurudevi and the Swamis every day. The shortened version with English is sung in our Satsangs, in-person and online on Sundays and Wednesdays.

When I wanted to be able to sing along, I learned this hymn on morning walks along the harbor. Every day, I would bring two lines to memorize.  I started with the chorus:

Mera Antara timira mitavo,

Sadaguru jyota se jyota jagavo.

Remove the darkness concealing me,

Teacher of Truth, awaken my inner light

You, too, can memorize this chorus and join us in song. All the resources you need are now available:

  • Find the words for the Hindi version in Gurudevi’s new book Yoga’s Sacred Songs on page 31.  The English version is on page 36.
  • Download the free Gurudevi Nirmalananda App from Google Play or Apple App Store.  Click on “Satsang Chants” to find the words for “Jyota se Jyota” at the top of the list.
  • Or find the words on the svaroopa.org website on the “Satsang Chants” list under the purple “Freebies” tab.

Even better, listen to Gurudevi sweetly sing it in Hindi on her new album Honoring the One Who Needs No Praise, and in English on the recently released Mystical Song of the Guru.

As the song starts to wind down, I look forward to belting out the final verse:

Jivana Muktananda Avinashi. (x2)

Charanana sharana lagavo.

Sadaguru jyota se jyota jagavo!

O limitless one, Swami Muktananda,

In your lotus feet, I take shelter.

Teacher of Truth, awaken my inner light!

Hearing this perfectly sets me up for meditation.  Muktananda awakens “my inner light.”

Come sing along with us!

Spiritualize Each Day

By Amanda (Purna) Schmidt

A new year means a new calendar! The title of Gurudevi’s Calendar Journal — “Living Mysticism” —  encourages weaving the sacred into daily life.

The pages offer space for organizing your schedule or freely journaling. And of course you can do both!

Sutra-like excerpts from Gurudevi’s teachings inspire you on each page.  Embrace the yoga of spiritualizing all aspects of life.  Begin a new year with a new outlook, based in the Self.

Eat Like a Yogi

Are you thinking about improving your nutrition? The beginning of a new year is a good time to make this change.

Fortunately, Gurudevi is soon teaching her popular online Yogic Nutrition course. Learn how to eat like a yogi.

Drawing on yoga, Ayurveda and scientific nutritional guidelines, she gives you easy ways to improve your nutritional profile.  These classes take place online, including a kitchen segment — from the Ashram kitchen to yours!

You learn straightforward, yummy meal preparation with vegetarian protein featuring the six Ayurvedic tastes.  The purpose is to achieve health as well as pleasure and (most importantly) spiritual development as yogis feed themselves consciously.

In the first “Yogic Nutrition” class, my taste buds came alive.  I was in shock! Gurudevi guided us through making toast with all six tastes on it.  A huge light bulb went off.  Food can be good and good for me! — Sheralee H.

Multiple Yoga Miracles

By Debbie (Antarajna) Mandel

Twice I contracted Covid, in 2021 and 2023. Each time it turned into long Covid.

Then I had multiple physical issues. My whole body was in reaction: heart, lungs, eyes, toes, fingers, cancerous growths on my face, insomnia and more.

I asked Gurudevi about it. She recommended I do three hours of Ujjayi a day. My first reaction: that is impossible! I wasn’t consistent with 20 minutes a day.

My next reaction was how stupid it would be to not follow my Guru’s directions! Why would I even consider not doing what she suggests?

So, over a month, I slowly built three hours of Ujjayi a day into my life in fifteen-minute segments. After several months, Gurudevi added me getting Embodyment® Yoga Therapy sessions. What? But I did it.

Yes, my health issues disappeared — lungs, heart, insomnia, and all the other Long Covid symptoms. And a few months later I contracted Covid again and had no residual effects.

I always have a choice to make — bumble along on my own or follow my Guru’s direction. Choosing the latter has never led me astray. It has enhanced my inner state and, therefore, my external life benefits.

As if that wasn’t enough, I received a bonus. With Ujjayi, time has expanded exponentially, so I always have enough time to do everything. And more.

Through following my Guru, I have expanded exponentially! I live deeper in Self. I have the stamina back to go to India again on our Ashram’s upcoming India trip “Coming Home to Self.” And that is truly a yoga miracle.

Living Mysticism — 2025 Calendar Journal

By Lynn (Gurupremananda) Cattafi

Shhhh … don’t tell anybody, but I got a sneak peek at Gurudevi’s 2025 Calendar Journal. She took everything that worked so well with the format of the 2024 version and made 2025 even better!

The cover photo for 2025 is one of my personal favorites of Gurudevi. Someone described it as a visual manifestation of the upwelling light of Consciousness. The photo is pure Grace.  What a way to start every day!

The 2025 daily quotes are perfectly selected to keep us moving forward, and ever inward, on our path to enlightenment. I love how the 2024 Calendar Journal daily quote always meets me right where I’m at.

Gurudevi reading the quote at the start of Meditation Club every morning is such a bonus. When she adds her comments, it makes the teaching land even deeper inside.

For each 2025 daily quote, Gurudevi I has included the name and date of her Teaching article from which it comes. I love this! Sometimes, I don’t make a note of her article reference when she states it. Some days, I simply missed it while my mind was contemplating the quote.

Now, I will be able to effortlessly find the source article to read in its entirety. I look forward to being able to imbibe the teaching in its fullness. I plan to make this a daily practice. It’s a Grace-filled New Year’s resolution

Journey to the Guru Gita

By Joan (Jayadevi) Bragar

My first time hearing the Guru Gita being chanted was overwhelming.

How could anyone chant, no less memorize or understand, something that was one hundred and eighty-two verses long? This is what I thought the first time I heard the morning recital of the Guru Gita at Svaroopa® Vidya Ashram.

I asked a longtime member, “How did you memorize the verses?” She replied, “I’ve been doing it for a long time.” She and others clearly loved this chant. I was curious, but not convinced.

Fast forward one year, I was back at the Ashram for Gurudevi’s Blue Pearl Retreat. This time I was prepared with new resources that Gurudevi has painstakingly provided. Her new book, Yoga’s Sacred Songs, includes all of the Guru Gita verses in Sanskrit, along with the translations, rendered by her into English. Not only could I follow along, I could also understand what we were singing.

Now, in my morning home practice, thanks to Gurudevi’s 2024 album, Mystical Song of the Guru, I listen to her English version. On her Honored Guru Gita album, I listen to the Sanskrit version. I alternate these versions of the chant throughout the days of the week.

The English version teaches me the importance and value of revering the Guru as your Self. The Sanskrit version’s sonorous tones sink deeply into my heart — ever expanding me into Consciousness.

I am grateful for Gurudevi’s beautiful singing voice that brings us these ancient teachings in a delightful way. The Guru Gita gives us access to a spiritual tradition that moves me ever deeper into my Self.

Listen and enjoy!

Support for Your Yoga Journey

By Joan (Jayadevi) Bragar

Back in January, when I first got Gurudevi’s 2024 Calendar Journal, I had no idea how I would use it. When I open it now, I read pages filled with insights and reflections on my yogic journey.

This practice continuously deepens my connection to my Self as Shiva. For example, today’s quote from Gurudevi was:

“The trick in relationships is this: for a yogi, the friction is about changing you, not helping you get what you want from others.”

This teaching reminds me how to have something to give to my family over the holidays. I need to find it within myself first. Through meditation, especially daily meditation with Gurudevi in her Meditation Club, I am filled within. Thus, I am supported in having peaceful and loving relationships with my children and grandchildren.

Before we meditate, Gurudevi expands on the day’s Calendar quote. She reads the section of her teachings article from which the quote comes. I use the journal pages to take notes on it and to reflect on my experience after meditation. This journaling practice deepens my grasp of our mystical tradition.

Our new 2025 Living Mysticism Calendar Journal is now available in the Ashram store.  It has convenient references for every daily quote. These support you in going to the source articles to understand each quote more deeply. The 2025 pages are also slightly larger, so there is more room for writing what you are learning. I especially appreciate this for, in 2024, I often wrote sideways up the page to record all that I wanted to capture.

We have among us a living Master of the Shaktipat tradition — Gurudevi Nirmalananda. My appreciation for this blessing deepens as I use her Living Mysticism Calendar Journal. Through it, I deepen my connection with her.
